Partition

Dividing one large bedroom into two, Partition challenges the conventional detailing of a simple, non-load-bearing partition wall.

Decorative wood trim and baseboard elements are typically installed after gypsum board is hung to conceal imperfections along its edges and corners. However, in this project, Ettedgui—Dolick fabricated and installed the wood trim elements first, providing a recessed frame within which the gypsum board is set. This inversion reveals the precise craftsmanship of both the oak-wood trim and gypsum board, rather than concealing it.

A surprising and unplanned feature of Partition is that the new gypsum surface appears slightly brighter than the rest of the room despite being painted the same shade of white; the wood frame alters the perception of depth and shadow typically found in all-white corners, giving the wall a floating, canvas-like effect.
